50th anniversary boat: launch of “BARCOLANA 50” on 25th July 2018 thanks to SIAD
The Sailing Club Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano (SVBG) and the Italian company SIAD have designed and built a Passera sailing yacht in line with the Adriatic tradition.
BARCOLANA50 rediscovers the Adriatic tradition of daysailing.
Barcolana and its Official Sponsor SIAD have masterminded a unique project. Their goals are not only to rediscover and combine the shipwrights’ traditions with innovative and sustainable solutions, and to unify generations, but also to enhance the role of the Adriatic sea, create, and rediscover the feeling of adventure right on one’s doorstep. To achieve their targets, SVBG and SIAD have designed Barcolana50, a small and modern handcrafted Passera sailing yacht in line with the Adriatic tradition. The yacht is being built in the boatyard Cantieri Alto Adriatico in Monfalcone and will be used for social activities, as expressed by SIAD.
Mitja Gialuz, chairman of SVBG stated: “We wanted to keep the spirit of Barcolana50 alive after the Regatta. That’s why thanks to the investment of our partner SIAD, we decided to design and build a Passera. The knowhow in this sector in our area is extensive. All we had to do was put together naval architect Federico Lenardon, the shipwrights from Cantieri Alto Adriatico, and all the professionals and experts from our Sailing Club to make this project a reality. This adventure is so exciting that it is worth living it”.
The PASSERA BARCOLANA50 is a towable wooden daysailer, equipped with a small electric engine and fitted with a large gennaker. Thanks to its retractable keel, the yacht can also be sailed in lagoons. “This yacht is perfect for sailing in the Adriatic sea. Despite its small dimensions, it’s fast, sustainable, and made with special varnishes and resins. We put together a team of high level experts to design a sustainable, smart, yet affordable hull”, said Gialuz. “Tradition and modernity are the two words which best describe this yacht”.
The launch of Barcolana50 is scheduled for Wednesday 25th July 2018 at the Sailing Club Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano during the opening ceremony of Barcolana 2018. The Organizing Committee of Barcolana has directed a documentary on all the stages of the creation of the yacht Barcolana50: the concept, the design, the hull, and the launch. All four episodes will be available on the social media platforms of Barcolana from Wednesday 18th July 2018.
