An unusual sport, a spectacular setting, an afternoon of challenges, and the value of teamwork growing stroke after stroke. After the great success of 2024, the event returns as part of the 57th edition of the Barcolana: the Barcolana Dragon Boat University Challenge, organised by CUS Trieste in collaboration with the University of Trieste, CUS Venezia, the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, and with the support of the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, 7 October, when, starting at 2:00 p.m., the competition will get serious with the preliminary rounds featuring the distinctive dragon-headed and dragon-tailed boats — the Dragon Boats, each crewed by 16 members — representing CUS Trieste, CUS Venezia, CUS Udine, and CUS Bari.
PROGRAMME – On Tuesday, 7 October, the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the arrival of the Dragon Boats at Molo 0 – Porto Vecchio, followed by their transfer to the Bacino San Giusto (in front of Piazza Unità), where training will take place until 1:00 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., the unmissable Dragon Boat Head Blessing Ceremony will be held at the Barcolana InfoPoint in Piazza Unità — conducted in Chinese with simultaneous Italian translation — following the traditional ritual meant to bring luck, prosperity, and protection to the crews and their boats.
From 2:00 p.m., the 150-metre racecourse between the Rive of Trieste (from the end of Molo Audace) and the Old Port Breakwater will host the elimination rounds, followed by the eagerly awaited B Finals and A Finals between 3:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.. The Awards Ceremony will take place at around 5:00 p.m. at the InfoPoint in Piazza Unità.
