Barcolana and Wärtsilä working together to save our seas!

This year marks the 50th edition of the Barcolana – the world’s largest regatta which takes place this Sunday, October 14th in Trieste. On Sunday more than 2,200 sailboats and 25,000 sailors will take the waters to race in the gulf of Trieste. The events’ organiser, the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano (SVBG), was inspired by one of the main sponsors, Wärtsilä and their seabin project. This initiative sees the introduction of seabins, a device used to clean up and collect floating refuse and in particular plastic, from the backwash area of marinas. To date Wärtsilä have donated several seabins to strategic ports around the world as they do their bit to counteract pollution in our seas.

The SVBG’s president Mitija Gialuz said “Wärtsilä has inspired us and as so this years’ Barcolana, the world’s largest regatta, will also adhere to this initiative”. The poster for the regatta, which was designed by Marina Abramovic, is currently on exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence as part of the artist’s solo exhibition. The poster is also available online on Amazon as well as the Barcolana Village’s merchandising shop. All proceeds from the sale of the posters will be used to purchase additional seabins, in line with Wärtsilä’s initiative, to remove waste from our seas.

The Barcolana manifesto, which was presented in July in Milan, London, Florence, Munich and Rome promoted an important message which also ties in with Wärstilä’s global initiative known as Oceanic Awakening. Oceanic Awakening is a global movement focused on the radical transformation of the world’s marine and energy industries into one supremely efficient, ecologically sound, digitally connected and collaborative ecosystem. As the saying goes, we are all in the same boat, meaning that we all have the responsibility and duty to protect and safeguard our planet. There are over 2000 posters for sale with already online sales arriving from around the world.
