Barcolana57 presented by Generali: winners of the 2025 edition celebrated

The 57th edition of the Barcolana presented by Generali officially concluded today. Several weeks after the regatta, held on 12 October, the crews that distinguished themselves in the various categories were awarded at the Politeama Rossetti in Trieste, bringing to a close an edition that restored the city to the numbers and energy of major events. Barcolana57 presented by Generali stood out for the extraordinary participation both at sea and on land, the technical quality of the competition, and the exceptional engagement of the public, who animated the Gulf and the Rive in a shared, international celebration deeply rooted in the community.

This year’s edition was one of the most significant in the recent history of the Barcolana,” said Mitja Gialuz, President of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano. “Not only for the numbers, which showed steady growth, but for the event’s ability to bring together its global dimension and local roots. We saw an entire territory move in unison: nearly twenty thousand people involved in collateral activities, a fleet from 29 nations, and an audience exceeding four hundred thousand. Our thanks go to the Institutions, the sailing clubs, volunteers, citizens and our partners—particularly Generali—who support us with trust and vision. Barcolana is a great team effort, a project that continues to grow while keeping the sea and sailing at its core, and that each year succeeds in uniting tradition, innovation and collective energy.

During the ceremony, 124 prizes were awarded to the crews that stood out across the 15 competing categories, from the overall winners to the Cruise and One-Design classes. The trophies introduced in 2024 also returned: the Miro Cernaz Trophy, dedicated to the memory of the historic SVBG sea director; the Solaris Trophy, linked to the Barcolana Solaris Adriatic Cup; and the “La Mula de Trieste” Trophy, a challenge award reserved for the best-placed woman owner from Trieste with the highest number of participations, represented by the original bronze model of the celebrated sculpture by Nino Spagnoli.

A particularly meaningful moment was the presentation of the “Batiscafo Trieste” Prize, awarded last night at the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano by President Mitja Gialuz and the City of Trieste’s Councillor for Cultural and Tourism Policies, Giorgio Rossi, to Maurizio Cossutti, a Trieste-born designer behind numerous successful boats, including Barcolana winners. The award, dedicated to Innovation in Naval Architecture, is a perpetual challenge created to involve, year after year, the best designers on the Italian and international scene. Assigned to figures distinguished by innovation, sustainability or forward-looking vision—echoing the pioneering spirit that inspired the creation of the bathyscaphe Trieste—the prize consists of an original artwork by Trieste sculptor Del Ben, produced in collaboration with the historic Fonderia Artistica Pisani. The jury, composed of experts and representatives of national and local nautical excellence, selected Cossutti for his contribution to contemporary yacht design. The “Batiscafo Trieste” Prize is set to become a permanent fixture of the Barcolana, strengthening the dialogue between historical memory and innovation.

Supporting Barcolana—also on the occasion of the awards ceremony—was presenting partner Generali, which continues to believe in the event and support its development, particularly by driving the evolution of the “Generali Women in Sailing” project. Launched in 2019, the programme reached its seventh edition this year and expanded its scope by involving the sailing clubs of Zone XIII, sports psychologists, the Italian Sailing Federation and World Sailing, with the goal of fostering structured growth in mixed-gender sailing and creating new training, participation and leadership opportunities at both local and national level.

Within this framework sits the Generali Women in Sailing Trophy, celebrating women in leadership roles on board. This year the podium was particularly noteworthy: third place went to Bandito, helmed by Federica Tuniz of the Società Velica Oscar Cosulich; second place to Mundus, helmed by Cristiana Monina of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona; and first place to Marta 07, the Yacht Club Adriaco boat skippered by Giulia Ascione, a young skipper who led a mixed crew combining talent and energy. Marta 07, already a standout on the racecourse with its second place overall in Barcolana57, was one of the symbols of this edition: a young and competitive boat capable of interpreting flawlessly the shift in wind from Levante to Ponente that decided the race. The winners will receive a personalised coaching and leadership development programme curated by Generali Academy, designed to support skills and ambition beyond the racecourse.

Mixed-gender sailing is emerging as an important tool,” said Emma Ursich, Head of Corporate Identity at the Generali Group. “Working together, men and women, not only improves team performance, but also provides new role models beyond the sport itself and paves the way towards real equality of opportunity and recognition throughout life. Congratulations to the winners—our hope is that the number of mixed-gender teams continues to grow.

Alongside the Barcolana awards, the day also hosted the announcement of the winners of the Adriatico Classic Trophy, the circuit that brings together three prestigious events dedicated to vintage and classic yachts: the Hannibal Classic, the Trofeo Città di Trieste and the Barcolana Classic – SIAD Trophy. Including these awards within the Barcolana context further enhanced the nautical tradition of the Upper Adriatic, creating an ideal bridge between the most modern boats that animate the regatta and those that preserve the history and elegance of classic sailing.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Bacci del Buono and Maria Musil and enriched by musical performances from Swing à la Carte, welcomed the participation of key city and regional authorities and celebrated the conclusion of an edition that successfully combined sport, culture and collective participation.

The next appointment is set for Sunday 11 October 2026, when Trieste will host the 58th edition of the Barcolana presented by Generali.
