Barcolana Nuota held in perfect weather conditions, won by Marco Urbani and Alessia Capitanio

300 people took part in the ninth edition of Barcolana Nuota, which was dedicated to the Triestine water polo player Luca Giustolisi, one of the souls of the event, who passed away a few weeks ago.

With a new course starting and finishing at Molo IV, Barcolana Nuota, which is supported by Dolomia, Coop Italia, and Murphy&Nye, had Marco Urbani, athlete of the Tommasi Social and Sports Club of the Local Police, as its overall winner for the third time, and Alessia Capitanio of the Triestina Nuoto Sporting Club as the first ranked female athlete. Ashore the event was supported by patroness Stefania Pirozzi, Olympic athlete who competed in London, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. “This is an exciting event,” she said, “there is so much history and so much passion for swimming here in Trieste, and this event honours it.”

“Barcolana nuota is growing year by year,” commented President Mitja Gialuz, “and is now ripe and ready for an improvement in quality that will give exposure to the event at the international level. Together with the Triestina Nuoto Sporting Club we will immediately start working to improve its role and exposure, so that it will involve more enthusiasts who want to swim together in our Adriatic Sea and in memory of Luca Giustolisi.”
A special participant “overlooked” the start of the Barcolana Nuota today: it was photographer Massimo Sestini, who filmed the start of the competition from a State Police helicopter as part of a larger photography project. Sestini will also film the start of the Barcolana regatta next Sunday using the same techniques.

At the end of Barcolana Nuota, the paralympic finswimming promotional competition took place, organised by FIPSAS FVG (Italian Federation of Sport Fishing, Underwater Activities, and Finswimming). This competition is a preview of the Italian championship being held in San Vito al Tagliamento next week and of the world championship happening in Lignano Sabbiadoro in November, which already has 253 registered participants. Around fifteen disabled athletes, including juniors, seniors, and masters, were at the starting line today in Trieste and this was an opportunity for the Barcolana’s audience to get to know this discipline.
