Fifth Edition of Barcolana Sea Summit inaugurated

The fifth edition of Barcolana Sea Summit was officially inaugurated at the Generali Convention Centre, in the presence of regional authorities and representatives from the scientific world. Within the framework of the ceremony, the opening of the 2025-2026 Academic Year of the United World College of the Adriatic also took place, in the presence of president Roberto Antonione and rector Khalid El-Metaal: a moment of great symbolic and international value, which reaffirmed the importance of education as an instrument of peace, cooperation and environmental protection.

It is a great honour to be here today,” declared Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano president Mitja Gialuz, “at a moment that unites two realities profoundly connected in values and vision of the future such as Barcolana and the United World College of the Adriatic. We wanted to inaugurate together the Barcolana Sea Summit and the opening of the College’s new academic year because we share the same principles: freedom, peace and sustainability. Over the years, Barcolana Sea Summit has grown to become a genuine platform for dialogue and content, dedicated especially to young people, to the new generations who today more than ever are called to take up the challenge of protecting the planet. There is an article of our Constitution, number 9, which was recently modified to establish environmental protection in the interest of future generations. And it is precisely to you, students, that we look as a symbol of this future: you are the concrete proof that an international community can build sustainability and cooperation.”

The day was completed with the European workshop “Blue Economy: research and selection of personnel in Europe with EURES”, dedicated to training and employment opportunities in maritime sectors.

Tomorrow the day will continue with a rich calendar of meetings at GCC: at 10:00 in Hack hall the Carabinieri conference on the “One Health” model, which explores the connection between health, environment and society; at 4:00 PM in Illy hall the ARPA FVG panel on underwater noise and marine environment protection. At 5:30 PM, the Generali Auditorium will host the theatrical performance “Fiumi Scomparsi” with Marco Paolini, Paolo Fresu and Rajeev Badhan, an artistic journey between music, images and memory dedicated to Trieste’s relationship with its lost waters.
